Leigh Dawber, CMO of Cape Town Tourism, says they are always looking for new and innovative ways to inspire potential travellers to choose Cape Town. “With the influence of immersive digital experiences, research shows that 70% of people who view a virtual tour online link through to a direct booking opportunity.”
Jacques Clarijs from Gecko Digital Global, says the company noticed a global trend that 35% of people who view a virtual tour end up making a direct booking with the client on their own booking engine.
For any digital marketing campaign, conversion to booking is one of the best outcomes. Virtual reality certainly helps this conversion and also provides the confidence a traveler needs in making their booking. It’s a win win for all.

What will a WINE ROUTE360 VR Tour look like?
We created a demo VR tour of the Elgin Grabouw region in the Cape Winelands in South Africa which includes a stop at Peregrine Farm Stall, a wine tasting at the Charles Fox Wine Estate, lunch at South Hill Vineyards and an overnight stay at Old Mac Daddy. Click here to view.
Whereas the demo VR Tour of Elgin Grabouw uses the travellers as the voice over, a WINE ROUTE360 VR Tour will take more of a storytelling approach and be more personal. We will use the voice overs of the winemakers, accommodation hosts, restaurant owners, chefs and activity hosts which create an immediate connection with the traveller.
What’s the next step?
We plan a content creation trip to each wine route and are looking for up to 10 wineries, 10 accommodation providers, 20 restaurants for lunch or dinner and 10 activities or experiences to feature in each unique VR Tour for a particular wine region.
What are the costs?
Participating in a WINE ROUTE360 Virtual Reality Tour is on a shared cost basis. Each participant contributes a small, reasonable amount which includes being featured in the VR tour with one 360 VR panorama with a personal voice over and soundtrack.
The 360VR panorama will also include a direct link to your website, online store or booking website. We’ll also shoot an additional four 360 panoramas which you can use for your own marketing and promotional activities.
You’ll also be required to host and cover the costs of two crew for the featured meals, accommodation, wine tastings and activities.
