Innovation in Wine Tourism Marketing
South African Tourism has always strived for innovation in tourism marketing and at this years Africa’s Travel Indaba, for the first time, visitors will be able to participate in a very unique immersive wine tasting experience.
Hosted in SA Tourism’s DOME, which has 360 virtual reality video projection in a 10m DOME and surround sound, visitors will be virtually transported to some of the Cape Winelands most iconic wineries as they enjoy their wine. They’ll feel as if they’re standing in the vineyards, in the cellar with the winemaker, in the tasting room and enjoying the best views that the Cape Winelands has to offer.

It will give visitors a chance to relax while still experiencing the best that the Cape Winelands can offer.”
Participating wineries will have a unique platform to not only showcase their wines but also their wine tourism offering. Recent research from SA Wine indicates that for small to micro wineries, up to 36% of their revenue is derived from wine tourism - which is also a significant employer with over 40 000 people employed in wine tourism.
“Virtual reality is a very powerful way to transport people to any destination and it’s far, far more powerful as a shared experience with other people in an immersive dome where you truly feel that you’re at the location,” says Stanley Edwards from Platypus Digital who will be filming and producing the 360VR content. “We’re very excited about collaborating with SA Tourism and share their vision for creating more immersive experiences to promote wine tourism.”
